HINDI MEDIUM MOVIE STRUCTURE ANALYSIS

Image result for hindi medium movie poster

Summary: This movie is about the rich parents, weak with their  fluency in English struggling to get the admission of their kid in the best English medium school in Delhi. Hence the total story is about the ways which parent take to get admission of their kid and the after effects.
As the story was without a bunch of songs and told in a subtle way with the comical elements and Hence I personally had a thought to analyse the structure of this story for retaining what I learnt and also sharing the same.

TWO STRUCTURES
1. SYD FIELD STRUCTURE OF THE STORY.

2. MICHEAL HAUGE

Goal of the protagonist

Goal  of the protagonist is very much evident in this film. As Raj batra and his wife wanted their child to study in a prominent English medium school initially and then the goal changes with the guilt of them taking a chance given through right to education.
Structure is always building the path towards the goal of the main characters. Here the goal is very much evident.

SYD FIELD

ACT 1

  • SET UP / INCITING INCIDENT : As in this structure an interesting set up is called inciting incident. Hence according to the structure there is the travel of set up given below towards the plot point 1.

This scene introduces the complete nature of  Mr Raj Batra in a comical way. As he is cool and calm to his customers. Don't shy away from selling the product himself and also the introduction of worker was necessary during the initial stage. As he plays a role afterwards also.

Hereby Mrs Meeta Batra and child Piya Batra is shown. Her obsession towards the care of her kid is exposed in this scene. This character of her moves the entire story towards the goal. As she wants the best school for Piya.

( party where Raj batra forgets sophistication humiliating Meeta batra )

Then changing their home to a porch area near school and its after effects which leads to the situation where admission of Piya to Delhi grammar school becomes more than a want to Meeta Batra and Raj Batra is an obedient husband throughout.

Plot point 1

This conversation according to me is the plot point where Meeta Batra tells to the lady in the same porch locality that Piya is also going to study in "Elite school" as mentioned by Meeta in conversation where the other lady's ( played by neha duptia) kid is studying without getting admission in the school.

ACT  2

Media showcasing the news as Operation admission with Raj and Meeta trying through different mediums such as standing in que from morning for admission form, going to a Counselor for seeking help on admission and still not getting the admission moved the  story upto fourty percentage of the film.

After the Counselor  giving up Raj Batra tries everything then comes to a conclusion to give bribe to the institution for admission but didn't succeed. Then the employee in his boutique opens up the news that he got his child's admission in the same school under the provision of RTE(Right to education). This news leads the story forward to the mid point.
Raj Batra then gets false documents of being below poverty line to get her daughter admitted to Delhi grammar school. This leads to further complications when the principal announces the proper checking of the people for RTE.

MID POINT

Mid point is when they come to live in Bharat nagar to escape from the checking.

As the hindi teacher in the school is made to check the status of the people registered in RTE who  gave the complaint to media about the malpractices conducted in school regarding RTE.
Even the small characters in the movie play a role in moving the story forward such as this hindi teacher and the employee of boutique character. As this is one of the important feature to make the audience believe that nothing is coincidence and also this makes the story interesting.

Introduction of this character Shyam in Bharat nagar helps Raj batra in crucial situation of water scarcity. Shyam plays a vital role in story hereafter.
As he also filled a form in the same school for his son.

Shyam and family helping him to overcome the inspection and teaching them poverty following a misunderstanding that they became pauper recently creates an emotional relationship between Raj batra's family and Shyam's family.

Then the day of lot where Piya gets selected and Shyam's child didn't get a chance in Delhi grammar school.
Raj batra and his family comes back to the rich life but the guilt is still there in them. As they did fraud and took away the right which Shyam prakash and his family would have got.
and with the guilt they tend rejuvenate the government school where Raj studied. But Shyam prakash's son also accidentally studied in the same school which leads to the scene where shyam knows that Raj and his family is rich and played fraud in Bharat nagar.
Then the climax of the film starts when shyam tries to complaint about Raj Bhatra going to school but changes his mind after seeing Piya there.

Climax

finally Raj decides to admit his fault before the principal and goes to her office. This confrontation between principal and Raj bhatra gives start to the climax where Raj rises from a normal helpless man to a person who shows the school that the students of poor people are also as talented as the students of rich people with the help of the  Hindi teacher.

As the resolution of the story is the point where Raj bhatra decides that his kid will study in the government school and not in the Delhi grammer school.

In this film the structure was very much evident. As the structure could be used as a reference after the story has been written to improve the story. Structure will not help in creating a good story.
Another points which I felt in this film which made it interesting were its characters and conflicts which built up the story so well. This film reminded me of two films i.e Pasanga 2( Tamil) for the que scene and most parts of Salt Mango tree ( Malayalam Film).
But I felt still this film has done a decent job in building up the story.

Difference between a direction and screenwriting
Direction:

Direction is basically managing people and the things which would lead to the presentation of the screenplay visually through the medium of camera. Hence, Director should be thorough with the script and should know all the characters and situations deeply to include his creativity visually. One of the examples which I saw in a recent film is Oscar nominated film Fences directed and acted by Denzel Washington.

This conversation between Troy and Rose has been taken from behind the iron mesh showing their developing distance in the relationship and was totally symbolic to their conversation.

All Hitchcock films are examples of direction and its projection in the screen such as Rear Window, Vertigo, strangers in a train, North by North west etc.

Screenplay writing

Screenplay is considered as the blue print which is always used as a reference throughout the film. Screenplay is the script of a film, including acting instructions and scene directions.

Example of a script format in Hollywood style

1 page is considered as 1minute standard time. Some software such as Cel tex, final draft, high land and fade in are used to structure the story in script format.

Examples
At the 64th National Film Awards, the film won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam  and  Syam Pushkaran  won the award for Best Original Screenplay.
Screenplay Writer (Adapted): Sanjay Krishnaji Patil for Dashakriya (Marathi)
Dialogues: Tarun Bhascker for Peli Chuplu (Telugu)

Maheshinte Prathikaaram (English: Mahesh's Revenge) is a 2016 Indian Malayalam-language comedy-drama film The film tells the story of Mahesh Bhavana (Faasil), a photographer, who attempts to defuse a conflict between his friend Crispin (Shahir) and a group of youngsters passing through their village, and is knocked to the ground. Defeated in the tussle and unable to fight back, he is embarrassed in front of his neighbours. Mahesh publicly vows that he will not wear his slippers again until he has avenged the humiliation.

After the cremation of the deceased, certain rituals are performed for the next thirteen day, as there is a belief that these rituals lead the deceased to Moksha i.e. salvation from the cycle of rebirths. Immersion of ashes is performed on the third day and the final round of rituals takes place on the tenth day. These rituals are to be performed on the banks of the Ganges, the sacred river. The emotionally vulnerable family of the deceased readily performs the rites as per the instructions of the Kirvant i. e. the section of the Brahmin community who is supposed to lead all the last rites and thereby earn their living. The Kirvants, looked down upon by the rest of the Brahmin community, exploit the emotions of the bereaved family to satiate their greed. The whole exercise is thus commercialized crossing all the limits. ‘ Dashakriya ’ ( The Tenth Day Ritual) profoundly depicts this harsh reality.

While revealing the disturbing reality around the last rites, their commercialization and the emotional exploitation of the bereaved family ‘ Dashakriya ’ focuses on how even the Kirvant kids mindlessly get involved in the business due to extreme poverty.

At last I took the decision to turn my life to a new direction and started my journey to study film making in Mindscreen film institute Chennai for the six months course for studying screenwriting and direction. This blog is dedicated to those people who want to study screenwriting and direction but cannot afford the course. This blog will be the mixture of my viewpoints and what I learned inside and outside the institute.  With the hope that this blog would help me and you for developing ourselves as someone who knows and executes the craft on screen.
